Karyl commenced her training with Robyn Hick (now a RAD examiner) in Newcastle, completing all Vocational Exams.
Karyl attended various international dance classes in London and Europe in the late 1970s. She then returned to Newcastle, opening up her own dance school in 1979. This began her teaching career, and Karyl has, therefore, had her RAD teaching registration for 45 years. During this time, she helped hundreds of students complete their RAD examinations.
In 1982, Karyl commenced enrolment with the Australian College of Physical Education in Sydney, where she studied various dance styles for educational school settings and taught at the McDonald College. In 1983-1984, Karyl was co-principal with a college friend at their dance school in Narrabri. In 1985, she was the co-caretaker Principal for the Robyn Hick School of Dancing in Newcastle while Robyn studied to become an examiner in London. Since then, Karyl has enjoyed being a freelance teacher, teaching at many dance schools across Newcastle, the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley.
In 2003, Karyl became an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance, allowing her to use “ARAD” after her name in recognition of her achievement at the advanced level of the academy syllabus.
Karyl’s proudest achievement has been supporting and guiding her daughter, Elisabeth, to be the very talented dancer and teacher that she is today. This includes mentoring and encouraging her to embrace both local and international opportunities for her dance career.
Karyl has previously taught classical ballet to many of the students at Luminous through other dance schools and thoroughly enjoys having the opportunity to teach them again.
Karyl engages her students and ensures they understand the importance of classical technique to avoid injury and produce aesthetically pleasing lines and movements, hoping that her passion for ballet transfers to her students.
